Volunteering
Giving time and energy to a cause you believe in is so important. It not only helps others, but it allows you to gain new experiences, abilities, and meet some amazing people. During my college years, I strove to volunteer every semester. Below are the organizations I volunteered with and how they will help me practice school psychology in the future.
Head Start Volunteer
Fall 2015-Spring 2016
One of my most rewarding experiences has been volunteering on the psychology team at Darden Head Start in Opelika, Alabama. Each week, I spent about 8 hours there performing various tasks. One was learning and administering the Speed DIAL-4 assessment. This has given me firsthand experience with management of children and assessment techniques. Along with fellow team members, I taught social skills lessons such as Stop & Think, Listening, and Sharing. These lessons have taught me how to manage a room full of children, hold their attention, and work with teachers and peers. I also spent time in the classrooms being a buddy for children with difficult behaviors and modeling correct behavior. In this role, I was able to learn appropriate ways to correct children as well as how to be purposeful in praising good behavior. To learn more, you can read the paper I wrote about my experience, linked to the left.
Our House Tutoring
Fall 2016-Fall 2017
Our House is an endeavor in Auburn, Alabama providing free tutoring for children from kindergarten to middle school in a low income area. Each afternoon after school they can come and take advantage of the combined knowledge of adult and college age volunteers. I worked as one of these volunteers for a year now and greatly enjoyed not just helping the kids, but entering into relationships with them and encouraging them. Through this experience, I have had the opportunity to see how my demeanor must change based on age groups. I have discovered my strengths, weaknesses, and had the opportunity to test various techniques I had been learning in class to improve my skills with children.
Little H.A.P.I.E Tree Preschool
Spring 2016
The Little H.A.P.I.E Tree Preschool is a special school primarily dedicated to helping children on the autism spectrum. I spent 25 hours there volunteering as a classroom aid. Through this experience, I learned how to interact with children who have various disorders, befriend them, and act as an authority figure with them. One of the biggest lessons I learned was what a wide range of effects these disorders can have on children. I'm excited to learn more in the future.
